Hiemis – “Hyperborea” Album Review (dark ambient)

Hyperborea – HIEMIS

Cavernous and exploring the concepts of sparsity and vastness; that can summarize our subterranean offering for today.  Hyperborea is the latest release from dark ambient act Hiemis on the Noctivagant label.

Hyperborea  contains 6 tracks ranging from 3:36 to 12:34.    Much of this release as briefly noted explores drone-like vastness and sparsely-placed ambient planes.  Track 4, “Voormithadreth” might be our favorite with the heavenly voices weaving in and out of the seemingly endless ambient fields.  There are moments at different locations where the lines between drone and dark ambient are blurred and then crossed, often within the same piece.

There is much to be appreciated about this release by fans of ambient, dark ambient and drone music alike.   It’s really as simple as that.
