Atra Vetosus “Ius Vitae Necisque” EP Album Review (2016)

Ius Vitae Necisque – Atra Vetosus

Melodic black metal at its finest is the reason for our slight trip back in time to 2016; appropriately so considering our offering today bears somewhat of a nostalgic atmosphere.

Here we have an EP; 1 long epic track clocking in at just over 22 minutes; Ius Vitae Necisque by Australian masters Atra Vetosus.

The piece begins with a somber synth pattern which serves as the basis for the main melody.  Ius Vitae Necisque is another great example of how a very powerful composition can be built off of a couple of simple and somewhat repetitive patterns.  Make no mistake.  Boredom has no residence here.  The track builds to an emotional high with the entry of the guitar and double-bass drumming.  Periodically the track is broken up by key changes or synth breaks.  Such is the case around 6:52 when the track hits an emotional high; the change of the beat, riff along with the strategically placed vocal stabbings.   That pattern continues until about the 10:00 mark where we hear a piano interlude against the backdrop of a synth and atmospheric tremolo guitar.  Back to the power of the secondary riff we go adding a single note-picked pattern over the top.

The brutality of the piece comes to a halt (though the emotional element continues) around 16:50 when the storm sound makes way for a treated acoustic guitar solo.  A couple of layers are added until the piece fades with the rain at the end and the track is done.

What an undertaking this one track must have been; both in terms of composition and mixing.  Immortal Frost Productions once again proves they can do no wrong with their artists.  In this case, Atra Vetosus-a black metal band that creates something massive and moving from something simple.

Copies of Ius Vitae Necisque are still available although the pressing was for 500.  The digital version is available on Bandcamp as well.  Note also that this EP is available on Itunes, Spotify, Google Play, Amazon, Shazam.
