Krzysztof Penderecki – “Kosmogonia” Album Review

KRZYSZTOF PENDERECKI Kosmogonia - Lo res album cover for web
Kosmogonia – Krzysztof Penderecki

There exists a very fine line between genius and madman.  In the case of today’s offering, that line exists at 00:00 on the digital clock.

If the name Krzysztof Penderecki doesn’t strike a chord for you, surely you have unknowingly been witness to cinema bearing his unconventional and often searing sonic mark.

Mr. Penderecki’s work includes the unforgettable music from such films as The Shining, The Exorcist, Children of Men, The People Under the Stairs, Shutter Island among others.

From Cold Spring; “Thanks to the estate of Krzysztof Penderecki, Cold Spring are honoured to present this masterpiece in digital format for the first time since the 1974 vinyl release.  Sympathetically remastered for CD by Denis Blackham and final mastering by Martin Bowes.   “Unnerving, intense, bloodcurdling, sinister, dramatic – the music of “Kosmogonia” features Penderecki’s famous, unorthodox instrumental techniques, and some of the darkest music ever composed.”

Mr. Penderecki hasn’t simply left his mark through compositions of iconic films.  Even a new listener, 5 minutes into this album will begin to create scenes of their own; scenes ranging from the heroic to the horrific.  Not only does the music exhibit extreme dynamics but so do the images created by new and old listeners alike.  One moment of glory yielded by strings, horns and soprano vocals can lead to moments of minimal low-end windy tension.  The full orchestra is used herein..strings, horns, percussion with the addition of the occasional soaring vocal.  From mellow discordant moments to abrasive stabbing of stringed swords…

Park musical genius?  Part creator of sonic madness?  Mr. Penderecki crafts modern classical tapestries that guard the listener and then open to lead the listener to unknown territories.  There is a comfortable discomfort in this important album.  Kosmogonia is simply analogous to a haunted roller-coaster in the middle of an abandoned theme park.

Penderecki has been the recipient of many prestigious awards and has also been a professor at Yale University School Of Music and Krakow Conservatory.

Kosmogonia is available now from Cold Spring Records in a 6-panel digipak.
